1873 The Grand Trunk Railway converts the gauge of its line between Stratford and Montreal, 421 miles together with 60 miles of sidings, from 5' 6" to the standard gauge of 4' 8 1/2". The track work was completed in 24 hours and occasioned but 16 hours interruption in the use of the main line.

1883 The Holyhead was a steamer owned by the London and North Western Railway which rammed the barque Alhambra amidships in the Irish Sea between Dublin and Holyhead in clear weather. The Holyhead's general cargo included 300 pigs, and 17 horses. The Alhambra was carrying coal as ballast and was almost cut in two and sank in a few minutes. The Holyhead sank shortly afterwards. The loss of life from the Holyhead totalled 13, including the Captain, C.W.Hicks, and his daughter. Loss of life on the Alhambra not known, but there was a crew of 25.
