First description of potato by Caspar Bauhin, Swiss botanist, scientifically in his Phytopinax, assigning it the current binomial name Solanum tuberosum. However, he conjectured potatoes could cause wind and leprosy (because of a vague resemblance to leprous organs) and that they were aphrodisiac.
