1997 Norway's Boerge Ousland emerges on the Pacific edge of Antarctica to become the inaugural person to cross the continent alone and unaided. 

1997 Norwegian Borge Ousland completed a 1675-mile trek across Antarctica, the inaugural time anyone transversed the continent alone 

1997 Myfanwy Piper, librettist, dies at 85. 

2001 Civil rights leader Rev. Jesse Jackson admitted he had fathered a daughter born out of wedlock in 1999 to an employee of his Rainbow/PUSH coalition 

2002 In another anti-terrorist step ordered by Congress, U.S. airlines began inspecting every piece of luggage checked by passengers 

2003 Protesters nationwide demonstrated in opposition to possible war in Iraq.

2017 NASA and NOAA announce that 2016 was the hottest year on record, surpassing the previous record set in 2015 which itself topped a record set in 2014 

2018 inaugural drone rescue of swimmers by lifeguards in New South Wales, Australia. 

2018 Brazilian surfer Maya Gabeira rides the largest-ever wave by a female surfer at 20.72 m (68 ft) at Praia do Norte in Nazaréin, Portugal

2023 A helicopter crash in Brovary near Kyiv, Ukraine results in the deaths of 14 people including Ukrainian Minister of Internal Affairs Denys Monastyrsky 

2024 Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejects US calls to scale back war with Hamas or establish Palestinian state, vowing, in a televised address, nothing other than "absolute victory" [1]. 

2024 Pakistan conducts retaliatory airstrikes on Iran's Sistan and Baluchestan province. 

2025 27th and 28th US military strikes in international waters of the eastern Pacific Ocean sink two suspected drug smuggling vessels and kill five, bringing total deaths in the program to over 100 

2025 98 people are killed in a fuel tanker explosion near Suleja, Niger State, Nigeria 

2025 Two Sharia judges are assassinated in their rooms at the Supreme Court of Iran in capital Tehran. The gunman injures two other people and commits suicide after the attacks.
