Jan 04   Tunisian street vendor Mohamed Bouazizi dies after setting himself on fire a month earlier, sparking anti-government protests in Tunisia and later other Arab nations. These protests become known collectively as the Arab Spring   

Jan 08   Attempted assassination of Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and subsequent shooting in Casas Adobes, Arizona at a Safeway grocery store results in the deaths of 6 and wounds 13, including Giffords.   

Jan 09   Southern Sudan holds a referendum on independence. The Sudanese electorate votes in favour of independence, paving the way for the creation of the new state in July.   

Jan 11   Flooding and mudslides in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro results in the deaths of 903.   

Jan 14   Arab Spring: The Tunisian government falls after a month of increasingly violent protests; President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali flees to Saudi Arabia after 23 years in power   

Jan 14   Stampede near Sabarimala in Kerala, India results in the deaths of 104 devotees and injures 100 more   

Jan 15   Wikipedia the free internet encyclopedia turns 10 years old   

Jan 24   37 people are killed and more than 180 others wounded in a bombing at Domodedovo International Airport in Moscow, Russia   

Jan 24   At least 35 died and 180 injured in a bombing at Moscow's Domodedovo airport   

Jan 25   Egyptian Revolution of 2011 begins in Egypt, with a series of street demonstrations, marches, rallies, acts of civil disobedience, riots, labour strikes, and violent clashes in Cairo, Alexandria, and throughout other cities in Egypt   

Feb 03   All available blocks of IPv4 internet addresses are officially distributed to regional authorities.   

Feb 11   Arab Spring: Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak steps down after widespread protests calling for his departure, leaving control of Egypt in the hands of the military until a general election can be held.   

Feb 11   Egyptian Revolution culminates in the resignation of Hosni Mubarak and the transfer of power to the Supreme Military Council after 18 days of protests.   

Feb 14   The 2011 Bahraini uprising commenced   

Feb 15   Libyan protests begin opposing Colonel Muammar al-Gaddafi's rule   

Feb 22   An earthquake measuring 6.3 in magnitude strikes Christchurch, New Zealand, killing 181 people.   

Feb 22   Uncertainty over Libyan oil output leads to crude oil prices to rise 20% over a two-week period following the Arab Spring,[14] causing the 2011 energy crisis   

Feb 24   Final Launch of Space Shuttle Discovery (OV-103).   

Mar 09   Space Shuttle Discovery makes its final landing after 39 flights.   

Mar 11   A 9.1-magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami hit the east of Japan, killing 15840 and leaving another 3926 missing. Tsunami warnings are issued in 50 countries and territories. Emergencies are declared at four nuclear power plants affected by the quake.   

Mar 11   An earthquake measuring 9.0 in magnitude strikes 130 km (80 miles) east of Sendai, Japan, triggering a tsunami killing thousands of people. This event also triggered the second largest nuclear accident in history, and one of only two events to be classified as a Level 7 on the International Nuclear Event Scale.   

Mar 11   Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in Japan killing 15897 people.   

Mar 15   Arab Spring: Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, King of Bahrain declares a three-month state of emergency as troops from the Gulf Co-operation Council are sent to quell the civil unrest   

Mar 17   Arab Spring and the 2011 Libyan civil war: The United Nations Security Council votes 10-0 to create a no-fly zone over Libya in response to allegations of government aggression against civilians   

Mar 19   Arab Spring and the Libyan civil war: In light of continuing attacks on Libyan rebels by forces in support of leader Muammar Gaddafi,[20] military intervention authorized under UNSCR 1973 begins as French fighter jets make reconnaissance flights over Libya.   

Apr 01   After protests against the burning of the Quran turned violent, a mob attacked a United Nations compound in Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan and killed thirteen people, including eight foreign workers.   

Apr 09   A gunman murdered five people, injured eleven, and committed suicide in a mall in the Netherlands   

Apr 11   Former Ivorian President Laurent Gbagbo is arrested in his home in Abidjan by supporters of elected President Alassane Ouattara with support from French forces thereby ending the 2010-2011 Ivorian crisis and civil war   

Apr 11   Minsk Metro bombing.   

Apr 19   Fidel Castro steps down from the Communist Party of Cuba's central committee after 45 years of holding the title   

Apr 23   Zach Daniels defeated Rick Michaels to become the new TNT Heavyweight Champion.   

Apr 25   At least 300 people killed in deadliest tornado outbreak in the Southern United States since the 1974 Super Outbreak.   

Apr 27   The deadliest day of the 2011 Super outbreak of tornadoes, the largest tornado outbreak, in United States history.
