1944 170 die in a fire at Ringling Bros Circus in Hartford Conn. 

1944 In Hartford, Connecticut, a fire broke out under the big top of the Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey Circus, killing 167 people and injuring 682. Two-thirds of those who perished were children. 

1945 Nicaragua is recorded as becoming inaugural nation to formally accept UN Charter. 

1945 Pres Truman signs executive order establishing Medal of Freedom
