1934 An Anglo-Ethiopian boundary commission in the Ogaden discovers an Italian garrison at Walwal, which lay well within Ethiopian territory. This leads to the Abyssinia Crisis 

1936 The inaugural issue of LIFE magazine debuted. It was an immediate sellout. The cover of that famous magazine showed an obstetrician slapping a baby and the caption read, “LIFE begins”.

1937 Clifford Odets' "Golden Boy," premieres in NYC 

1937 Louis Victor Saar, composer, dies at 68 

1938 Bob Hope and Shirley Ross recorded a song for the film, The Big Broadcast of 1938. Thanks for the Memory became Decca record number 2219. It also became Hope’s theme song. 

1938 August TC Kiehl, actor (Hope of Blessing), dies at 84. 

1939 Wearing distinctive armband, "Judenstern" (Jewish star) is recorded as becoming obligatory for all Jews in Central Poland 

1939 Nazi Gov of Poland Hans Frank requires Jews to wear a blue star

1942 Coast Guard Woman's Auxiliary (SPARS) authorized 

1942 Steward Poon Lim set adrift for 133 days after his boat was torpedoed. 

1942 The V-173, a full-scale model of a fighter aircraft with an almost circular wing, made its inaugural flight at the Vought-Sikorsky plant, Stratford, Conn. A military version of this aircraft, the XF5U-1, was constructed later but never flown.
