1942 Steward Poon Lim set adrift for 133 days after his boat was torpedoed 

1942 The V-173, a full-scale model of a fighter aircraft with an almost circular wing, made its inaugural flight at the Vought-Sikorsky plant, Stratford, Conn. A military version of this aircraft, the XF5U-1, was constructed later but never flown. 

1942 3rd and 5th Romanian army corp surrenders 

1943 For the second straight day, British bombers attacked Berlin, recording 1315 civilian deaths. The two-day bombing resulted in a total of over 4000 Berliner deaths. British aircrew deaths from the attacks neared 300 

1943 On this day, 200 German soldiers surrounded the house where British agent Michael Trotobas was hiding. Trotobas shot and killed the Gestapo officer who had come to arrest him, then kept firing until he was gunned down himself.

1958 One of the last drama programs on radio debuted. It was unusual in that it followed the TV show of the same name. Have Gun Will Travel was broadcast on CBS radio and starred John Dehner as Paladin. Richard Boone played Paladin on TV.
