Dec 11 Astronauts Cernan and Harrison become 11th and 12th on the Moon. 


Dec 11 John Mills, cricketer (7 Tests for NZ in early 1930's, 241 runs), dies 


Dec 12 Captain Eugene A. Cernan, USN, commander of Apollo 17, walks on the Moon. Commander Ronald E. Evans, USN, was the Command Module Pilot. The mission lasted 12 days, 13 hours and 52 minutes. Recovery by HC-1 helicopters from USS Ticonderoga (CVS-14) 


Dec 13 An HC-1 Detachment Five SH-3G Sea King helicopter, stationed aboard Oriskany, rescued a VFP-63 pilot involved in operations in the Tonkin Gulf while on Yankee Station. This was the fifteenth pilot rescued by HC-1.
