1950 Korean conflict begins; N Korea invades S Korea. 

1950 North Korean troops move into South Korea 

1951 The inaugural commercial color TV program was seen. It was a four-hour-long show presented on CBS and carried in New York City, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Boston and Washington, D.C. Arthur Godfrey, Faye Emerson, Sam Levenson and Ed Sullivan starred in the TV milestone. An interesting side note to this event is that the public didn’t own any color TVs at the time and CBS, itself, owned only about three dozen sets 

1951 1st color TV broadcast-CBS' Arthur Godfrey from NYC to 4 cities. 

1953 Algy Gehrs, cricketer (6 Tests for Australia 1904-11), dies. 

1954 Eduard M Meijers, Dutch lawyer (Civil Code), dies at 74 

1956 51 die in collision of "Andrea Doria" and "Stockholm" (Cape Cod). 

1956 Alfred C Kinsey, US zoologist/sexologist, dies at 62 

1959 Charles Starkwether, murderer, executed 

1960 WH Walter Baade, German/US astronomer (Andromeda), dies at 67 

1961 Iraq announces that Kuwait is a part of Iraq (Kuwait disagrees). 

1962 The U.S. Supreme Court ruled (5 to 4) that prayers in public schools violated the inaugural Amendment to the Constitution regarding the separation of church and state. 

1962 Ephraim Lisitsky, Hebrew poet, dies 

1964 Gerrit T Rietveld, Dutch architect (Sonsbeekpaviljoen), dies at 76 

1966 Beatles' "Paperback Writer," single goes #1 and stays #1 for 2 weeks. 

1966 Kosmos 122, inaugural Soviet weather satellite, launched 

1967 400 million watch Beatles "Our World" TV special 

1968 Tony Hancock, actor/writer (Call Me Genius, Rebel), dies at 43 

1971 Charles Vildrac, Paris France, poet/playwright, dies at 88. 

1973 John Dean begins testimony before Senate Watergate Committee. 

1975 Mozambique gains independence from Portugal (National Day). 

1976 Johnny Mercer, US songwriter (That old Black Magic), dies at 66 

1977 LBJ denies report he had a cancer during his presidency 

1977 Roy C Sullivan of Va is struck by lightening for 7th time! 

1977 Endre Szervanszky, composer, dies at 65. 

1978 Argentina beats Holland 3-1 in soccer's 11th World Cup at Buenos Aires. 

1978 Hussein al-Ghasjmi, president of North-Yemen, murdered. 

1981 Supreme Court upholds male-only draft registration, constitutional. 

1982 Natalie Rasmussen is born 

1982 Porn star John Holmes acquitted on murder charges. 

1982 Sec of State Alexander Haig Jr steps down, replaced by Schultz. 

1982 SF holds its inaugural County Fair 

1983 Udo Beyer of East Germany sets record for shot put, 22.22 m 

1983 Alberto Evaristo Ginastera, Argentine composer (Panambi), dies at 67
