1996 Bernard Frank, oriental scholar/writer, dies at 69. 

1997 Near Coast of Central Chile a 7.3 quake resulted in five people killed at Pueblo Nuevo, one person killed at Coquimbo, one person killed at La Chimba and another died of a heart attack at Punitaqui. More than 300 people injured, 5000 houses destroyed, 5700 houses severely damaged, another 10000 slightly damaged.
